What’s the Big Deal with Indoor Air Quality?

You’ve probably heard the buzz about indoor air quality. The market is expected to reach 6.0 billion by the end of 2025. That’s huge! People are wondering more about the air inside their house, but should they worry?

Usually when we hear “air quality,” we think of pollutants outside like smog. What we tend to overlook is the air we breathe in our own homes. According to the National Center for Biotechnology, indoor air pollution (IAD) is a “serious threat to human health.” There’s no immediate solution to manage the air outside, but at least we can control the air inside our own walls.

“Indoor air pollution (IAP) is a serious threat to human health, causing millions of deaths each year. A plethora of pollutants can result in IAP; therefore, it is very important to identify their main sources and concentrations and to devise strategies for the control and enhancement of indoor air quality (IAQ).”

IAQ could be the answer to many mysterious illnesses or the stressor to multiple existing conditions. Here’s a few of the ailments IAP can cause or worsen:

  • Sick building syndrome
  • Heart/lung disease
  • Heart attacks
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Aggravated asthma
  • Decreased lung function
  • Increased respiratory symptoms
  • Eyes, nose, throat irritation
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Damage to the liver
  • Cancer
  • COPD
  • Kidney damage
  • Chronic respiratory illness

The list goes on. Long story short, indoor air quality is incredibly important to our health, including any children and pets who live in the home. Experts recommend at least getting your air quality checked out or, even better, getting an air filtration device.
